Linguistic Concept Cards — 148 Hand-Drawn Language Therapy Cards

One deck. 148 hand-drawn cards. Hundreds of ways to target language.

Linguistic Concept Cards were designed and hand drawn by Deborah Brooks, MA, CCC-SLP, TSSLD to give speech-language pathologists, educators, and caregivers a flexible visual tool for building receptive and expressive language skills.

Rather than assigning only one “correct” target to each card, these illustrations are intentionally versatile. The picture stays the same, but the language can grow.

Use individual cards, pair contrasting cards, create groups, sequence pictures, or combine images to adjust the linguistic complexity for each child.

Use the cards to target:

  1. Spatial Concepts — in, on, under, above, below, behind, in front of, next to, up/down, and more

  2. Qualitative & Descriptive Concepts — colors, size, attributes, same/different, real/imaginary, and more

  3. Quantitative Concepts — one/many, more/less, amounts, counting, and quantity

  4. Temporal Concepts & Sequencing — before/after, first/next/last, day/night, and sequencing events

  5. Grammar & Syntax — building grammatically complete sentences and increasing sentence complexity

  6. Morphology — plurals, pronouns, possessives, verb forms, comparatives, and grammatical markers

  7. Subject–Verb Agreement — including is/are and other verb forms

  8. WH Questions — including what, where, who, when, why, and how

  9. Describing — using attributes, actions, locations, quantities, categories, and other relevant details

  10. Compare & Contrast — identifying and explaining similarities and differences

  11. Expanding MLU — moving from single words and short combinations toward increasingly complex utterances

  12. Vocabulary & Semantic Relationships

  13. Sentence Expansion

  14. Reasoning & Inferencing

  15. Narrative Language

  16. ...and so much more!

One Image, Different Levels of Language

A single image can support language at multiple levels:

Early language:
“Fish.” → “Blue fish.” → “Two fish.”

Sentence level:
“The fish are swimming.”
“There are two blue fish.”

More complex language:
“Both pictures have fish, but this picture has two fish and the other picture has one.”

This makes the deck easy to adapt to your student's individual goals, current language level, and level of support needed.

Great for:

Speech-language therapy • Early intervention • Preschool and school-age language therapy • Small groups • Teletherapy • Home practice • Special education • Language enrichment

What You’ll Receive
